FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS…

I often receive emails from other photographers -

this is a quick collection of the most commonly asked questions….  Hopefully you’ll find them helpful!

.

What do you shoot with? What are your favorite lenses?
Most recently, I’ve acquired a ID Mark III, but I also use a 5D.

As for favorite lenses:

50mm 1.2           24-70mm 2.8           70-200mm 2.8

.

Post-processing…
I shoot in RAW – which means I do all basic edits in RAW.  I find it gives me the most flexibility.   I use Adobe Light Room for 98% of my post processing – and only move an image into Photoshop if needed.

.

Your images are so colorful and sharp – how do you do that?
First of all – shooting in RAW allows the camera to read more data – which believe leads to both better clarity and color in my work.  (purely my opinion!)  I do run a ‘sharpen for web’ action (which is a personal setting I created in LR) which also helps.

.

Do you offer classes, workshops, tutoring, mentoring, or can I be an assistant or work in your studio?
At this time I currently have no openings for assistants or interns…

I do on occasion offer workshops – which usually run only one day and cover a variety of things… shooting, editing, business basics.

Mentoring – I am available for one on one mentoring at the rate of $100 per hour (with a minimum of 4hours)   We can cover any number of subjects – and can cover anything you wish!

.

How did you get started? What kind of training did you have?
In college I searched for the perfect art form to express myself by – and after trying my hand and drawing and painting – with the help of my college sweet heart (now husband) I found photography.  I can honestly say I at first didn’t know what I was doing at all!  I never intended to start a business… I just knew I had found an art form I could be in love with.  I bought my first SLR (a canon rebel) -  read the entire manual, and anything and EVERYTHING I could about photography.  I learned from my husband who had taken photography classes about all the technical aspects.  He was a wonderful teacher.

We spent time shooting together, for friends, as a hobby.  When a friend asked us to shoot their wedding we refused.   After much begging we finally relented, and you could say a career was born.  I applied for a business license that very week.  I had found my calling.   I have spent the last four years building my brand and studying my craft  - all the while developing a deep passion for loving and serving my clients.  I have honed in on my style… feel confident shooting in any circumstance thrown at me… and cannot imagine another career.

April Montague - Hi Emily! I don’t know if you remember me or not, but I am Jen Carley’s little sis. I just noticed that you occasionally do workshops, and I was wondering if you had any coming up. I’m just delving into photography and would love to learn. Your pictures are always so stunning! Just let me know when you get a chance. Thanks!
